Hiring for Technology in the UK.
2023 saw a significant period of change in the Technology industry following on from the hiring boom of 2022. The first two quarters saw a reduction in new requirements and an increase in redundancies. Despite the recent layoffs, the demand for technology talent saw peaks in some areas.
Through Q3 the IT Infrastructure market saw an increase in demand for Cloud and Cyber Security specialists as companies continued to adjust to the new hybrid way of working. Data and Analytics saw a surge in the need for Data Scientists and Big Data specialists as multiple industries look to harness the power of their data in driving strategic decisions.
Software Development saw a decrease in vacancies with Asset Management, Hedge Funds and the Crypto industry being an exception to the rule as they looked to take advantage of the lack of competition in hiring through H1. Through Q3 the wider market saw an increase in vacancies with employers often citing a shortage of available talent as one of their biggest obstacles to hire.
The hot new trends and demand for talent peaked in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, where most companies struggled with a shortage of skilled talent.

Up, down or flat? The state of salaries.
As the demand for talent increased, the technology sector has seen substantial wage increases with the average salary now 25% higher than in 2020. Candidates' motivations for job change align with this with the majority prioritising salary over other factors in their decision making, with work flexibility a close secondary driver. Counter offers are still frequent, however less so than in 2022.
The shortage of talent in some markets will see salaries continually increase, particularly across Data, AI, Cyber and Cloud, whilst we expect it to stabilise in Software Development.
