No doubt, you will go through a roller coaster of emotions; confidence, self doubt, anxiety and countless other feelings in the lead up to the big day. But now it’s time to put your worries aside and focus on how you will prove to a group of strangers that what’s on your resume, is truly who you are!

When it comes to Javascript Developers, employers are looking for individuals who embody a number of core competencies. From my personal experience of leading such interviews and hearing firsthand feedback of what employers are looking for, I have been able to compile a list of 5 crucial competencies.

So before you walk into your next interview, take a look through this list and consider how you can apply this to yourself on the interview day.

Top 5 Competencies of a Javascript Developer:

  1. A Gadget Geek

Technology hiring managers are always keen to find individuals who stay up-to-date with the latest front-end technologies and frameworks; React / Node / Ember /Angular, to name but a few. Make sure to let them know that you're always learning and staying ahead of the curve!

  1. An Innovator

The most successful Javascript candidates that I've come across were always able to show their interviewer that they are highly creative individuals. Showing your ability to think outside the box and challenge the status quo will make you a hot commodity in such highly competitive industry.

  1. Perseverance

This is probably one of the more obvious competencies out of the lot, but nonetheless essential to include. The most sought after Javascript professionals are the ones who pay respect to design and execution. Showing an awareness & strong ability to see things through to completion is so important, and referring to personal case studies of this can give you the edge in the eyes of the employer.

  1. Adaptability

Demonstrating that you are a quick learner and highly adaptable will work in your favor at interview stage. If you can show the employer that your highly adept at picking up new technologies quickly and at making decisions that will positively impact the UX/UI, then you will definitely stand out from the crowd.

  1. A Communicator

Strong communication skills are vital for survival in the world of Javascript Development - even if you are not client facing, you will still need to be able to work collaboratively with your team within an Agile environment. So make sure to let your interviewer know that you have a voice, and you're not afraid to use it!
