About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and highly organised Transport Planner to join our clients busy transport operation based in North Louth.
The successful candidate will have proven experience within heavy haulage, abnormal loads, or specialist transport, with a strong understanding of transport planning, route requirements, driver management and operational compliance.
This is a full-time, fully on-site position, working closely with drivers, customers, transport management and other operational teams to ensure all movements are planned and delivered safely, efficiently and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate daily heavy haulage and specialist transport operations.
- Schedule vehicles, drivers and equipment to meet customer requirements.
- Plan routes for heavy, wide, long and abnormal loads, taking into account restrictions, permits, bridges, road conditions and access requirements.
- Liaise with relevant authorities and third parties regarding abnormal load permits, notifications and route approvals.
- Coordinate with drivers throughout the planning and execution of movements.
- Ensure all transport operations comply with relevant UK transport legislation, operator licence requirements, drivers' hours and working time regulations.
- Monitor vehicle and driver availability and maximise fleet utilisation.
- Communicate effectively with customers regarding collection and delivery arrangements.
- Deal with operational issues and changes quickly and efficiently.
- Maintain accurate transport records, schedules and documentation.
- Work closely with the transport and operations management team to improve efficiency and service levels.
- Ensure all planned movements meet company health, safety and compliance standards.
- Assist with forward planning and resource allocation for larger projects and specialist movements.
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience as a Transport Planner within heavy haulage or specialist transport.
- A strong understanding of abnormal load planning and route requirements.
- Experience coordinating drivers, vehicles and specialist equipment.
- Good knowledge of UK road transport legislation and compliance.
- Excellent geographical knowledge and strong route-planning ability.
- The ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Strong attention to detail and a practical, problem-solving approach.
- The ability to prioritise competing demands and react quickly to operational changes.
- Good IT skills, including experience with transport planning or fleet management systems.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working with abnormal load permits and notifications.
- Experience in project transport or specialist movements.
- Knowledge of escort requirements and abnormal load procedures.
- CPC or relevant transport qualification.
- Previous experience working with heavy haulage vehicles, trailers and specialist lifting/transport equipment.
