Transport Manager

Morgan McKinley is delighted to be partnering with a global leader in logistics and supply chain solutions to appoint an experienced Transport Manager for their Shannon operation.

This is a key operational leadership position within a nationwide logistics network, responsible for overseeing regional collection and delivery activity across domestic, UK and European freight operations.

The successful candidate will take ownership of transport performance, network efficiency, cost control and customer service, while leading relationships with subcontracted transport partners and internal depot teams. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced transport or logistics professional to take responsibility for a high-volume operation within a globally recognised organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Transport & Operational Management

• Lead the efficient management of regional collection and distribution operations through a network of subcontracted transport partners.
• Develop and maintain strong commercial relationships with key subcontractors, ensuring a cost-effective, reliable and efficient transport network.
• Work closely with other depots across Ireland and the UK to ensure seamless movement of freight and effective network connectivity.
• Manage daily trunking and linehaul requirements, ensuring appropriate trailer capacity is available to meet operational demand.
• Monitor and resolve outstanding Proof of Delivery (POD) issues with subcontractors and other network locations.
• Investigate operational issues, identify root causes and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
• Ensure transport activities consistently meet agreed customer service levels and operational KPIs.
• Review working practices in conjunction with the Branch Manager, identifying opportunities to improve productivity, service and operational efficiency.
• Represent the depot at operational meetings, network reviews and conference calls.
• Ensure all daily transport costs are accurately and efficiently recorded on the relevant systems.
• Manage subcontractor performance with a clear focus on service quality, cost control and network profitability.
• Maintain accurate Health & Safety information and records through the company's business management systems.
• Oversee warehouse staffing requirements, ensuring appropriate resource levels and operational cover.

Customer & Stakeholder Management

• Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, providing proactive communication and effective resolution of operational queries.
• Act as a key point of contact for transport-related customer issues, ensuring timely investigation and resolution.
• Develop strong working relationships across the wider national and international network.
• Provide clear operational reporting and KPI information to internal stakeholders and customers where required.

Leadership & People Management

• Lead, motivate and develop the transport team to deliver high standards of operational performance and customer service.
• Establish individual development plans and performance objectives through the company's appraisal process.
• Ensure all team members understand and adhere to company policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Create a positive and engaging team environment that supports employee development, motivation and job satisfaction.
• Identify and facilitate appropriate training and development opportunities to enable employees to achieve their objectives and perform effectively.
• Set clear expectations around performance, accountability and continuous improvement.

Key Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will bring:

• Proven experience within a transport, logistics, distribution or supply chain environment.
• Previous experience managing transport operations, subcontractors and/or delivery networks.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
• Excellent attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
• Experience using Transport Management Systems (TMS) and operational systems.
• Strong commercial awareness, with an understanding of transport costs and profitability.
• Excellent communication and relationship-management skills.
• Proficiency across Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
• Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven operational environment.
• Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements within a transport or logistics setting.
• Experience developing, monitoring and reporting against operational KPIs.
• Strong leadership and teamwork capabilities.
• Experience with performance management, appraisals and objective setting.
• A flexible and adaptable approach, with the ability to respond effectively to changing operational demands.

This role would suit an ambitious Transport Manager, Transport Supervisor, Depot Manager or experienced Logistics Manager who is looking to take ownership of a significant regional operation.

You will be commercially minded, operationally focused and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where customer service, cost control, people leadership and network performance are equally important.
