    Cybersecurity Engineer

    Shannon Permanent Competitive

    Cybersecurity Engineer

    About the job

    About the Role

An established multinational organisation is seeking a hands-on Cyber Security Engineer to join its IT team.

Cybersecurity is the primary focus of this role, with responsibility for maintaining and strengthening the organisation's security posture, controls, governance and accreditation requirements. You will play a key role in maintaining security certification, improving cyber maturity and ensuring the organisation remains secure and audit-ready.

The role will suit an experienced security professional who enjoys combining hands-on technical security work with governance, compliance and wider IT responsibilities. You will work across Microsoft security technologies, cloud platforms, identity, endpoint security, vulnerability management and incident response, while contributing to broader IT operations within a collaborative, hands-on environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Cyber & Information Security

    Security Controls & Accreditation

    • Own and maintain the organisation's Cyber Essentials Plus (CE+) accreditation and ongoing readiness.
    • Support the continued development of security maturity in line with ISO 27001 and recognised cybersecurity frameworks.
    • Implement and maintain security controls covering:
      • Firewalls and internet gateways
      • Secure configuration of servers, endpoints and cloud services
      • Identity and access management
      • Privileged access management
      • Malware and endpoint protection
      • Patch and vulnerability management
    • Maintain security documentation, evidence and technical artefacts required for audits and assurance activities.
    • Coordinate with external assessors and support audits, penetration testing and technical verification activities.

    Security Operations & Governance

    • Develop and maintain security policies, procedures and technical standards aligned with CE+, ISO 27001, CIS and NIST principles.
    • Maintain awareness of relevant regulatory requirements, including NIS2 and GDPR, particularly around security incidents and breach notification.
    • Configure, monitor and optimise security capabilities across Microsoft 365 and Azure, including:
      • Microsoft Entra ID and Conditional Access
      • Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
      • Microsoft Intune and device compliance
      • Microsoft Defender for Endpoint
      • Microsoft Defender for Identity
      • Microsoft Sentinel
    • Identify security risks and vulnerabilities and drive remediation through to completion.
    • Lead and coordinate cyber incident response activities, including detection, investigation, containment, remediation and lessons learned.
    • Support the delivery of security awareness, acceptable-use and related security training.

    Systems Administration & IT

    • Act as a senior escalation point for complex IT and security issues.
    • Support and administer core technologies including Microsoft 365, Azure, Active Directory and VMware/vCentre.
    • Ensure systems are securely configured and maintained in accordance with industry best practice.
    • Contribute to wider IT improvement and transformation initiatives.
    • Work collaboratively across a small, hands-on IT team, supporting activities beyond the core cybersecurity remit where required.

    About You

    Essential Experience & Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline.
    • 4+ years' professional experience, with cybersecurity as a significant focus of your role.
    • Practical experience implementing and managing security controls aligned with recognised frameworks such as Cyber Essentials Plus, ISO 27001, CIS or NIST.
    • Hands-on experience with:
      • Firewalls and network/boundary security
      • Identity and access management
      • MFA and least-privilege access
      • Patch management
      • Vulnerability management and remediation
      • Endpoint security and protection
    • Strong practical experience with the Microsoft security ecosystem, including Defender for Endpoint, Defender for Identity, Microsoft Sentinel, Intune and Entra ID.
    • Strong experience administering Microsoft 365, Azure, Active Directory and VMware/vCentre.
    • Understanding of NIS2, GDPR and relevant regulatory obligations as they apply to cybersecurity and incident management.
    • Experience developing and maintaining security policies, procedures and standards.
    • Familiarity with security audits, certification processes, evidence collection and technical assurance activities.
    • Comfortable working as a generalist within a small IT team and contributing across the wider IT environment.
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills with a practical, delivery-focused approach.
    • Authorised to work in Ireland.

    Desirable

    • Cybersecurity certifications such as CompTIA Security+, SSCP or equivalent.
    • Experience implementing ISO 27001 or developing an Information Security Management System (ISMS).
    • Experience operating and tuning a SIEM, particularly Microsoft Sentinel.
    • Exposure to SOC operations or cyber incident response.
    • Previous experience supporting security certification, accreditation or re-certification programmes.

    Personal Attributes

We're looking for someone who is:

    • Proactive and accountable, with the confidence to take ownership.
    • Detail-oriented, particularly when managing security controls, documentation and audit evidence.
    • Pragmatic, able to balance robust security with the practical requirements of IT operations.
    • Curious and continuously learning, with an interest in evolving cybersecurity threats, technologies and best practices.
    • Collaborative, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.

    The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to take ownership of a broad cybersecurity remit within an established international organisation. The successful candidate will have the scope to influence security standards, strengthen technical controls, lead accreditation activities and contribute to the organisation's ongoing cyber maturity, while remaining close to the underlying technology and day-to-day IT environment.
