Semiconductor Equipment Engineer - Maintenance & Automation

    About the job

Join a global analog semiconductor manufacturer as a Semiconductor Equipment Engineer, supporting high-volume semiconductor production through equipment reliability, performance optimisation and continuous manufacturing improvement.

Based at a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Ibaraki Prefecture, this permanent opportunity combines semiconductor equipment engineering, preventive maintenance, production engineering, equipment commissioning and factory automation.

You will take ownership of equipment-related projects throughout the machinery lifecycle, from defining technical specifications and coordinating installation to supporting production start-up, maintenance and ongoing performance improvements.

A key focus will be improving equipment availability, production capacity, product quality and manufacturing cost efficiency. By investigating equipment failures and implementing sustainable corrective actions, you will help minimise downtime and maintain stable semiconductor manufacturing operations.

You will work closely with equipment suppliers, process engineers, production specialists and quality teams to improve machinery performance, resolve technical issues and identify opportunities to reduce manufacturing defects.

The position also provides exposure to digital manufacturing technologies, including equipment data analytics, external sensors, artificial intelligence and advanced monitoring systems that support smarter factory operations.

In addition, you will contribute to factory automation initiatives, exploring technologies such as autonomous mobile robots and collaborative robots to improve operational efficiency and manufacturing capabilities.

This role is particularly suitable for an experienced Equipment Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, Production Engineer, Mechanical Engineer or Semiconductor Manufacturing Engineer seeking to apply their technical expertise within an advanced semiconductor production environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Define semiconductor manufacturing equipment specifications and coordinate delivery schedules with equipment suppliers and internal stakeholders.
    • Manage equipment installation, commissioning and production start-up activities, ensuring machinery is ready for reliable manufacturing operations.
    • Develop and implement preventive maintenance plans to improve equipment reliability and minimise unplanned downtime.
    • Investigate equipment failures, recurring faults and performance issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions.
    • Collaborate with equipment manufacturers and suppliers to improve hardware, software and overall equipment performance.
    • Identify opportunities to increase processing capacity, reduce manufacturing defects and optimise equipment productivity.
    • Work with process engineering, production and quality assurance teams to translate equipment improvements into better manufacturing results and lower operating costs.
    • Develop equipment monitoring and analytical capabilities using machine-generated data, external sensors, AI and data analytics.
    • Support factory automation projects involving autonomous mobile robots, collaborative robots and other advanced manufacturing technologies.
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across equipment maintenance, manufacturing efficiency, technical reliability and production quality.

    Required Skills and Qualifications

    Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in Science, Engineering or a related technical discipline.
    • Practical experience working within a mechanical engineering company or a comparable machinery-focused engineering environment.
    • Understanding of mechanical equipment, engineering systems and industrial machinery operations.
    • Ability to investigate technical equipment issues and contribute to practical engineering solutions.
    • Experience collaborating with equipment suppliers, technical specialists or manufacturing-related stakeholders.
    • Interest in applying engineering principles and technical knowledge to improve manufacturing equipment performance.
    • Willingness to develop expertise in semiconductor production equipment, maintenance and manufacturing technologies.
    Soft Skills:
    • Strong logical thinking, analytical reasoning and data-driven problem-solving skills when diagnosing equipment issues.
    • Ability to respond promptly to technical challenges and implement practical, effective solutions.
    • Clear communication and collaboration skills for working with equipment suppliers, process engineers and production teams.
    • Genuine curiosity about semiconductor technology, digital tools, automation and manufacturing innovation.
    • Proactive approach to identifying improvement opportunities and taking ownership of technical responsibilities.
    • Commitment to independent learning and continuous professional development as manufacturing technologies evolve.
    Language Requirements:
    • Japanese: Sufficient professional communication skills to coordinate effectively with equipment suppliers, manufacturing teams and relevant stakeholders. Fluent Japanese is preferred based on the position requirements.
    • English: Fluent proficiency is indicated for the position, supporting communication with international engineering teams and overseas equipment suppliers.

    Preferred Skills & Qualifications

    • 3+ years of experience in equipment maintenance, equipment commissioning or production engineering.
    • Experience working with semiconductor manufacturing equipment, including machinery used in high-volume production environments.
    • Technical experience involving precision machinery, industrial equipment or large-scale automated manufacturing systems.
    • Business-level English communication skills for discussing technical specifications with overseas equipment suppliers and engineers.
    • Familiarity with equipment monitoring, sensor technologies, manufacturing data analytics or AI-enabled production improvements.
    • Exposure to factory automation technologies, including autonomous mobile robots, collaborative robots or related industrial automation solutions.
