Our client, a well-established and highly regarded regional media organisation, is seeking an Assistant Editor - News & Digital to join their editorial team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced journalist or editor to take on a senior role within a fast-paced newsroom, contributing to both print and digital publishing operations.
Working closely with the Editor, the successful candidate will play a key role in shaping editorial output, driving digital growth, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, engaging content across multiple platforms.
The Role
As Assistant Editor - News & Digital, you will contribute to the day-to-day running of a busy newsroom, supporting content development across print and digital channels. You will play an active role in sourcing exclusive stories, managing editorial workflows, and enhancing digital publishing capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Source and develop exclusive content across news, features and court reporting, including editing submitted copy.
- Support the development of digital news output, working closely with subscription and online teams to grow audience engagement.
- Contribute to editorial planning and content strategy across print, supplements and digital platforms.
- Deputise for the Editor as required, ensuring continuity in editorial leadership and standards.
- Collaborate with journalists and contributors to deliver timely, accurate and high-quality content.
About You
You will be an experienced journalist or editor with a strong news sense, excellent writing ability, and the confidence to operate in a deadline-driven environment. You bring a passion for both traditional journalism and digital storytelling, along with the ability to contribute to a collaborative newsroom culture.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in news reporting or 2+ years in an editorial role.
- Experience working in a busy newsroom environment with tight deadlines.
- Strong interest and experience in digital publishing, including web and social media.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Team-oriented with good interpersonal and people management skills.
Desirable:
- Qualification in journalism or a related discipline.
- Experience with page layout tools such as Adobe InDesign.
- Knowledge of local or regional news landscapes.
