Join a growing renewable energy company as a Renewable Energy Development Specialist, supporting the development of large-scale High Voltage (HV) and Special High Voltage (SHV) renewable energy projects across Japan.
Based in Tokyo, you will work on projects from the early development stage, taking responsibility for permitting, regulatory approvals, community engagement, development risk assessment, and due diligence. You will coordinate closely with local and prefectural authorities, communities, neighboring landowners, internal project teams, and other stakeholders to move projects toward construction.
The role also covers permitting and community-related due diligence for acquisitions of development-stage renewable energy projects, as well as agricultural land conversion procedures where required for greenfield developments.
This is an opportunity to build hands-on expertise in renewable energy project development, permitting, stakeholder management, and acquisition due diligence while contributing to large-scale energy infrastructure projects across Japan.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify development risks and conduct preliminary due diligence covering critical permits, approvals, and local requirements.
- Lead discussions with local and prefectural authorities to identify the approvals required for renewable energy project development.
- Manage multiple workstreams to secure permits and regulatory approvals required for project development and construction.
- Manage permitting and community-related due diligence for acquisitions of development-stage renewable energy projects.
- Manage agricultural land conversion procedures where required for greenfield projects.
- Secure necessary consent from local communities and neighboring landowners for renewable energy developments.
- Build and maintain positive, long-term relationships with local authorities, prefectural authorities, communities, and other project stakeholders.
- Communicate project development progress, requirements, risks, and timelines effectively with internal project teams.
- Support the development of HV and SHV renewable energy projects across multiple regions of Japan.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- Experience developing renewable energy projects from an early stage in the Japanese market.
- Experience managing permitting and regulatory approval processes for renewable energy projects in Japan.
- Experience engaging directly with local and prefectural authorities and community stakeholders.
- Practical understanding of project development risks, approvals, and local requirements in Japan.
- Valid driver's license.
- Bachelor's degree.
Soft Skills:
- Strong communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Strong negotiation skills for working with government authorities, communities, landowners, and other local stakeholders.
- Ability to identify development risks and manage multiple permitting workstreams effectively.
- Strong organisational skills for managing project approvals, development requirements, and timelines.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal project teams and external stakeholders throughout the development process.
Language Requirements:
- Japanese: Native level.
- English: Conversational level.
