Haken Database Administrator - Oracle & AWS | Tokyo

Join a leading Japanese financial institution in Tokyo as an Enterprise Database Administrator (DBA), supporting mission-critical database infrastructure across a large-scale investment banking and financial services environment.

In this contract position, you will manage and optimise Oracle RAC and PostgreSQL database clusters, ensuring high availability, performance, data integrity and operational resilience for business-critical systems.

You will play a key role in database performance tuning, backup and recovery, disaster recovery planning, patch management and schema migration, while supporting the organisation's transition from traditional on-premises infrastructure to Amazon Web Services (AWS RDS).

Working closely with infrastructure engineers, application teams and technology stakeholders, you will help maintain stable database operations while delivering complex modernisation initiatives in a highly regulated financial environment.

The role requires deep technical expertise in SQL optimisation, database replication, Oracle RMAN, high-availability architecture and enterprise database administration, alongside meticulous attention to production change management and operational documentation.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor, administer and optimise Oracle RAC and PostgreSQL database clusters supporting enterprise financial systems.
• Perform SQL query optimisation, database performance tuning and capacity monitoring to maintain system efficiency and reliability.
• Execute scheduled database backups, recovery testing, patching and maintenance activities in accordance with operational procedures.
• Manage Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) processes and support database recovery and disaster recovery planning.
• Maintain and troubleshoot database replication, clustering and high-availability configurations to minimise service disruption.
• Plan and execute database schema migrations and production database cutovers, ensuring data integrity and controlled implementation.
• Support the migration of enterprise databases from on-premises infrastructure to AWS RDS, coordinating technical dependencies and migration activities.
• Investigate database incidents, perform root-cause analysis and document corrective actions to prevent recurring issues.
• Collaborate with application development, infrastructure and cloud teams to resolve database performance issues and support technology modernisation.
• Maintain detailed database operational documentation, recovery procedures and change records, ensuring alignment with financial industry security and compliance requirements.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Experience:

• 4+ years of professional database administration experience in high-volume, enterprise or mission-critical technology environments.
• Strong hands-on experience administering and maintaining Oracle RAC and PostgreSQL databases.
• Advanced knowledge of SQL performance tuning, query optimisation and database performance troubleshooting.
• Practical experience with database replication, high-availability configurations and clustering technologies.
• Strong understanding of database backup, recovery and disaster recovery processes, including Oracle RMAN.
• Experience managing database patching, schema migrations and production database changes.
• Familiarity with enterprise database infrastructure and the operational requirements of business-critical systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot database incidents and maintain reliable operations in environments with strict security and compliance requirements.

Soft Skills:

• Exceptional attention to detail and technical precision, particularly during production database cutovers, patching and recovery activities.
• Strong analytical thinking and structured problem-solving skills when investigating complex database issues.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

• AWS Certified Database - Specialty certification or relevant AWS database expertise.
• Experience migrating Oracle or PostgreSQL databases from on-premises environments to Amazon RDS.
• Previous database administration experience within investment banking, financial services or other highly regulated industries.
• Advanced understanding of Oracle RAC architecture, PostgreSQL replication and enterprise high-availability design.
• Experience supporting disaster recovery testing, business continuity planning and mission-critical database recovery.
• Familiarity with enterprise database security, compliance controls and cloud infrastructure modernisation programmes.
