Haken Cloud Architect - AWS & Azure | Tokyo

Join a fast-growing e-commerce technology company as a Principal Cloud Architect, leading the design and modernisation of enterprise cloud infrastructure across Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.

In this strategic contract position, you will assess the organisation's existing technology environment and develop fault-tolerant, scalable and cost-optimised multi-cloud architecture to support rapid business expansion across the Asia-Pacific region.

You will establish enterprise cloud architecture standards, guide the migration of legacy monolithic applications to containerised microservices, and drive FinOps practices to improve cloud cost efficiency and resource utilisation.

Working closely with engineering leaders, development teams and senior business stakeholders, you will translate technical architecture decisions into measurable business value and support the organisation's long-term technology strategy.

The role requires strong expertise in AWS, Azure, cloud-native architecture, serverless computing, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), cloud security and compliance, combined with the ability to influence executive-level decision-making.

This opportunity is ideal for an experienced Principal Cloud Architect, AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect or Multi-Cloud Architect seeking a high-paying contract role with remote working flexibility across Japan and significant ownership of cloud technology strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and implement enterprise cloud architecture standards across AWS and Microsoft Azure environments.
• Assess existing IT infrastructure and develop scalable, fault-tolerant and cost-efficient multi-cloud architecture blueprints.
• Lead architectural planning for the migration of legacy monolithic applications to containerised microservices.
• Collaborate with software engineering and infrastructure teams to design and implement cloud-native platforms and modern application architectures.
• Drive FinOps practices, including cloud expenditure analysis, cost optimisation and resource utilisation improvements.
• Evaluate and recommend serverless technologies, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) frameworks and cloud automation approaches.
• Establish architectural principles that support cloud security, regulatory compliance, reliability and operational resilience.
• Present cloud architecture strategies, technical roadmaps and business cases to senior executives and C-suite stakeholders.
• Mentor internal engineering teams on AWS and Azure best practices, cloud-native design patterns and architectural governance.
• Work with technology and business leaders to align cloud infrastructure investments, engineering priorities and measurable return on investment (ROI).

Required Skills and Qualifications

Experience:

• 7+ years of professional experience in IT infrastructure, including at least 3 years working as a Cloud Architect.
• Strong hands-on experience designing and implementing enterprise solutions using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional or Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification.
• Demonstrated expertise in enterprise cloud architecture, multi-cloud environments and scalable infrastructure design.
• Practical experience with serverless frameworks, cloud-native services and modern application architectures.
• Hands-on knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automated infrastructure provisioning.
• Strong understanding of cloud security, compliance requirements and enterprise architecture governance.
• Experience supporting legacy application modernisation, containerisation or microservices migration.

Soft Skills:

• Strong technical leadership and strategic vision, with the ability to connect engineering decisions to business outcomes.
• Excellent executive communication and presentation skills when explaining complex architecture strategies to C-suite stakeholders.
• Persuasive stakeholder management skills and the ability to build consensus around technical recommendations.
• Commercial awareness and an analytical approach to cloud investment, cost efficiency and return on investment.

Language Requirements:

• Japanese: Fluent level for communication with domestic engineering teams, business leaders and executive stakeholders.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

• Experience leading large-scale cloud transformation or multi-cloud architecture programmes.
• Advanced knowledge of AWS and Azure architecture patterns, high availability and disaster recovery design.
• Experience migrating monolithic applications to containerised microservices architectures.
• Strong understanding of FinOps, cloud cost governance and infrastructure resource optimisation.
• Experience with serverless computing, Infrastructure as Code and cloud automation frameworks.
• Previous experience in e-commerce, high-growth technology companies or venture-backed scale-up environments.
