Electrical Engineering Manager Tokyo | Solar & BESS

Join a growing renewable energy business as an Electrical Engineering Manager, leading the electrical engineering and technical execution of utility-scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in Japan.

Based in Tokyo, you will take technical ownership across the full project lifecycle, covering electrical design, grid interconnection, engineering, procurement, construction support, commissioning, and project delivery through Commercial Operation Date (COD).

The role includes reviewing electrical designs and calculations, technical specifications for major electrical equipment, and documentation for high-voltage (HV) and Special High Voltage grid interconnection. You will also work with EPC contractors, utilities, consultants, regulatory authorities, and internal project teams to ensure technically accurate and compliant project delivery.

As an engineering leader, you will manage and mentor electrical engineers while establishing engineering standards, quality processes, and continuous improvements in system performance, reliability, and maintainability.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead electrical engineering and design for utility-scale Solar PV and BESS projects in Japan.
• Review and approve Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), protection and control diagrams, grid interconnection drawings, and electrical calculations.
• Review technical specifications for PCS, BESS, transformers, switchgear, protection relays, cubicles, SCADA, and monitoring systems.
• Lead engineering support for HV and Special High Voltage grid connection applications and utility interconnection.
• Review technical documentation related to Grid Connection Studies, METI, OCCTO, and utility applications.
• Provide technical leadership throughout engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and COD.
• Support EPC contractors and review shop drawings, vendor submissions, and other technical documentation.
• Conduct site inspections and provide support for commissioning, completion inspections, and technical audits.
• Lead and mentor the electrical engineering team while establishing engineering standards and quality processes.
• Drive continuous improvement in system performance, reliability, maintainability, and engineering practices.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Experience:

• Minimum 5 years of electrical engineering experience in utility-scale Solar PV and/or BESS projects.
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Experience working with Japanese electrical regulations, grid codes, and utility interconnection requirements.
• Experience with METI, OCCTO, FIT/FIP, and renewable energy regulatory requirements in Japan.
• Experience supporting electrical engineering throughout project development, construction, commissioning, and COD.
• Experience leading engineering teams and mentoring junior engineers.
• Strong experience reviewing complex electrical engineering deliverables, designs, calculations, and technical documentation.

Soft Skills:

• Strong technical leadership and engineering decision-making capabilities.
• Excellent problem-solving skills for investigating electrical issues and developing effective corrective actions.
• Strong project coordination skills for working with EPC contractors, consultants, utilities, internal project teams, and regulatory authorities.

• Strong team leadership, coaching, and mentoring capabilities.

Language Requirements:

• Japanese: Business level or above.
• English: Conversational level.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

• Japanese Chief Electrical Engineer License (電気主任技術者).
• Experience with HV and Special High Voltage grid interconnection projects.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD for electrical engineering drawings.
• Experience using PVsyst for energy yield simulations and system optimisation.
• Experience using Microsoft Project to manage engineering schedules.
• Knowledge of international electrical standards, including IEC, UL, and JEC.
