A leading medical device manufacturer is seeking an Automation Engineer to support a major project focused on automating CNC manufacturing systems. This project will involve integrating bespoke, turnkey equipment into the existing manufacturing processes. The contract will run for 23 months, and this is a fully onsite role.
The role is ideal for mechanically focused engineers with strong problem-solving abilities and experience in fault finding, root cause analysis, and working with complex automation systems. These engineers will play a key role in supporting automation systems that have been pre-coded, working to integrate, test, and optimize them in the facility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support for the integration and optimization of bespoke CNC machines used in the manufacturing facility
- Perform fault finding and root cause analysis on newly automated systems, ensuring seamless integration with existing processes
- Collaborate with the automation partner during equipment installation and testing phases
- Understand the current manual processes and how they can be effectively automated to enhance operational efficiency
- Support the automation of manufacturing processes, including designing and optimizing automated workflows
- Work across five different streams, each with 2-3 engineers, including quality, maintenance, and automation specialists
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of automation systems to meet production and quality goals
- Assist with the commissioning and validation of automated systems and equipment
- Support the development of documentation for automated systems, ensuring standardization and compliance with required specifications
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- Level 8 Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in automation engineering and working with automated control systems
- Solid understanding of bespoke CNC equipment and experience in automation (turnkey projects)
- Familiarity with systems such as Allen Bradley, Siemens PLC, and industrial automation tools (PLC, SCADA, HMI)
- Strong mechanical fault finding skills and the ability to perform root cause analysis on complex systems
- Experience working with cross-functional teams, particularly in quality and maintenance environments
- Ability to understand and translate manual manufacturing processes into automated systems
- Experience with code is a plus, but not a focus; prior experience with automated systems and troubleshooting is essential
- Strong communication and team collaboration skills, with the ability to influence and resolve technical challenges
