This is a senior leadership opportunity within a leading international bank, responsible for owning and growing the Trading Companies and Heavy & Energy sector coverage in Japan. As Sector Head, you will drive origination, portfolio growth, and cross-border franchise development, working closely with senior clients and global stakeholders. The role offers significant autonomy, visibility, and influence over the bank's corporate banking strategy in Japan.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and execute the sector strategy for Trading Companies and Heavy & Energy clients in Japan, aligned with global business priorities.
- Act as the primary relationship owner for senior clients, driving origination across lending and transaction banking solutions.
- Expand the client franchise by identifying new opportunities and increasing wallet share with key strategic accounts.
- Deliver sustainable revenue growth while maintaining disciplined risk and return management across the portfolio.
- Partner closely with credit, risk, and product teams to structure compliant and client-appropriate solutions.
- Provide leadership to the coverage team, supporting talent development and high performance standards.
- Coordinate with regional and global stakeholders to support cross-border mandates and client activity.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- Extensive experience covering Trading Companies, Heavy Industry, Energy, or Infrastructure clients within corporate or institutional banking.
- Deep sector expertise, including understanding of macroeconomic, regulatory, and geopolitical factors impacting Japanese corporates.
- Proven ability to originate and manage senior-level client relationships within complex multinational organisations.
- Strong financial and credit analysis capability with a balanced approach to risk management and returns.
Soft Skills:
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence, develop, and guide teams in a collaborative environment.
- Commercially minded and relationship-driven with sound judgment and disciplined decision-making.
- Confident communicator capable of building trust with senior clients and internal stakeholders across cultures.
Language Requirements:
- Japanese: Native level.
- English: Fluent level.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Prior experience working within a global matrix organisation, coordinating across regions, products, and functions.
- Demonstrated track record of building long-term client franchises rather than purely transactional relationships.
