A leading global financial institution is seeking an experienced Financial Legal Director for its Tokyo branch. In this high-impact role, you will provide legal support for complex finance transactions, cross-border documentation, and regulatory matters. As part of a collaborative in-house legal team, you will play a critical role in shaping legal strategy and ensuring compliance in a dynamic, international environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal support for corporate loans, structured finance, project finance, and syndicated lending transactions.
- Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents in both English and Japanese, including loan agreements, collateral arrangements, and guarantees.
- Manage relationships and negotiations with external counsel and counterparties.
- Advise the compliance department on Japanese financial regulations and legal frameworks.
- Contribute to legal strategy, internal reporting, and assist in resolving disputes when necessary.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- 8-10+ years of relevant legal experience in finance, ideally in an international law firm or financial institution.
- Proven ability to manage multiple high-stakes matters independently.
Legal Certification:
- Qualified lawyer in Japan (Bengoshi) with strong academic background.
Technical Expertise:
- Deep knowledge of Japanese laws on banking, lending, and secured transactions.
- Experience drafting and negotiating complex agreements in Japanese and English.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Strong attention to detail, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
Language Requirements
- Japanese: Native-level proficiency (required for contract review and negotiation).
- English: Intermediate to business-level (required for cross-border transactions and documentation).
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting cross-border finance transactions and capital markets documentation.
- Familiarity with global legal systems and platforms used by financial institutions.
