Join a global technology and clean energy company as an Energy Policy Advisor, driving regulatory, policy, and electricity market initiatives that accelerate the deployment of residential Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Virtual Power Plants (VPP) in Japan.
Based in Tokyo, this strategic role focuses on energy policy, electricity market regulation, residential battery storage, grid interconnection, and VPP development. You will help shape market frameworks, identify and mitigate regulatory risks, and build relationships with government authorities, utilities, policymakers, and industry organizations.
Working closely with business development, sales, engineering, and global policy teams, you will translate complex regulatory and technical developments into strategies that support the expansion of distributed energy solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop energy policy and regulatory strategies to scale residential battery energy storage and Virtual Power Plant deployment across regional electricity markets.
- Monitor and analyze regulatory and policy developments affecting residential energy storage, charging assets, and distributed energy resources.
- Participate in regulatory proceedings and initiatives that influence electricity market frameworks for residential storage and charging technologies.
- Analyze regional electricity market design, grid interconnection requirements, capacity markets, and VPP operating frameworks.
- Identify potential regulatory risks involving cybersecurity, communication protocols, and international technical standards.
- Engage regulatory authorities to develop strategies for mitigating identified risks.
- Represent business interests with policymakers, utilities, and industry trade groups through public forums, regulatory filings, and legislative engagement.
- Build and maintain relationships with key government, utility, regulatory, and industry stakeholders.
- Collaborate with business development, sales, and engineering teams to align policy strategy with commercial and technical execution.
- Support regulatory compliance initiatives to protect brand reputation and maintain operational integrity within the energy sector.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- Minimum 5 to 10+ years of relevant professional experience within the electricity or energy industry.
- Bachelor's degree in energy, political science, economics, engineering, or a field related to utility business models.
- Deep knowledge of electricity markets, grid interconnection rules, capacity markets, and Virtual Power Plant operations.
- Proven experience developing risk management and regulatory compliance frameworks.
- Experience analyzing regulatory developments and their impact on energy markets, technologies, or business operations.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication capabilities.
- Ability to synthesize complex technical, market, policy, and regulatory information for both engineering and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong stakeholder management skills for working with policymakers, utilities, regulators, business teams, and technical specialists.
- Highly energetic and innovative approach to solving complex market and regulatory challenges.
- Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Language Requirements:
- Japanese: Fluent.

- Working knowledge of utility planning processes.
- Track record of achieving specific energy policy or regulatory outcomes.
- Experience with residential battery storage, distributed energy resources, or Virtual Power Plants.
- Knowledge of regulatory considerations relating to cybersecurity, communication protocols, and international technical standards.
- Experience engaging with government authorities, utilities, policymakers, or energy industry organizations.
