Join a market-leading global financial services organisation as a Compliance Transformation Manager in Tokyo, supporting the primary Japanese entity of a major international insurance and risk management business.
This role focuses on compliance program implementation, regulatory reporting, operational risk and compliance transformation. You will work across sales, operations, claims and head-office functions to strengthen controls, modernise compliance processes and ensure alignment with both Japanese regulatory requirements and global standards.
A key part of the role involves engagement with the Japan Financial Services Agency (JFSA) and industry associations, while also providing reporting and insights to local executive management and global compliance leadership in New York.
Importantly, direct compliance experience is not mandatory. Professionals with relevant backgrounds in legal, audit, risk management or broader financial services operations are also encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and execute annual compliance programs and risk assessments aligned with global standards and Japanese regulatory requirements.
- Partner with sales, operations, claims and head-office functions to provide compliance guidance and strengthen business process controls.
- Lead regulatory interactions, inquiries and official reporting with the Japan Financial Services Agency (JFSA) and relevant industry associations.
- Prepare compliance dashboards, incident reviews and progress reports for local executive management and global compliance leadership.
- Maintain internal policy frameworks and translate global compliance guidelines into appropriate local procedures.
- Design targeted employee training modules to support compliance awareness and implementation.
- Provide compliance and risk guidance to business stakeholders across multiple functions.
- Apply data and digital tools to identify emerging operational and compliance risks.
- Use agile working methods to improve and modernise existing compliance workflows.
- Support the broader transformation of compliance processes while maintaining alignment with regulatory and internal governance requirements.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- 5+ years of professional experience in Legal, Compliance, Audit, Risk Management or general financial services operations.
- Direct compliance experience is not required if you bring relevant experience from one of the other specified areas.
- Strong legal interpretation skills and familiarity with regulatory filings.
- Solid understanding of operational risk and control concepts.
Soft Skills:
- Collaborative team player with the ability to work effectively across multiple business functions.
- Strong stakeholder management skills for working with business teams, local executive management and global stakeholders.
- Agile mindset with an interest in improving and modernising established compliance processes.
- Ability to communicate regulatory, legal and risk-related topics clearly to different stakeholders.
- Proactive approach to identifying risks, strengthening controls and driving process improvements.
Language Requirements:
- Japanese: Fluent / Native level for local regulatory interaction
- English: Intermediate / Business level for cross-border communication
- Ability to communicate effectively with Japanese regulatory stakeholders and global compliance leadership.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience in the insurance or broader financial services industry.
- Previous professional experience within a Big 4 consulting or audit firm.
- Relevant legal or business qualifications such as J.D., Attorney, MBA or CAMS.
