Based in Tokyo, you will design and develop high-throughput REST APIs and scalable backend services across Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and on-premise infrastructure. You will work closely with data scientists and engineering teams to bring machine learning models and AI-powered services into production while improving platform performance, security, reliability, and scalability.
This opportunity is ideal for an experienced backend engineer in Japan looking to work with Python, GCP, REST APIs, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, big data, and AI/ML technologies in a high-scale production environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain high-throughput REST APIs and scalable backend services running on GCP and on-premise infrastructure.
- Collaborate with data scientists and engineering teams to productionize machine learning models and integrate AI-driven enrichment tools into platform services.
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) to support reliable and efficient DevOps delivery.
- Conduct code reviews, establish engineering best practices, and continuously optimize backend systems for performance, security, scalability, and reliability.
- Translate business requirements into robust technical designs while identifying and resolving system bottlenecks and effectively managing cloud resources.
- Contribute to the continued development of cloud-native platforms supporting large-scale e-commerce data and high volumes of user interactions.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend systems and API development.
- Proven experience designing and developing scalable systems using Google Cloud Platform (GCP) technologies such as GKE, Cloud Run, BigQuery, and Pub/Sub.
- Strong programming skills in modern backend languages, ideally Python with FastAPI or Flask, or equivalent technologies.
- Hands-on experience with RESTful API design, Git workflows, unit and integration testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Current physical residence in Japan with valid working rights.
Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify system bottlenecks and develop scalable technical solutions.
- Ability to translate business requirements into practical and reliable backend architecture and technical designs.
- Strong collaboration skills for working effectively with software engineers, data scientists, and other technical stakeholders.
- Quality-focused engineering mindset with an emphasis on maintainability, performance, security, and reliability.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of technical challenges in a fast-moving engineering environment.
Language Requirements:
- English: Fluent, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a professional engineering environment.
- Japanese: Basic level.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Practical experience with Docker, Kubernetes (GKE), and Terraform or comparable Infrastructure as Code technologies.
- Familiarity with big data processing pipelines and technologies such as Apache Beam, Google Cloud Dataflow, and Apache Airflow.
- Experience working with data warehouses and large-scale data processing environments.
- Experience deploying machine learning models into production.
- Experience integrating LLM or AI-based services into live production systems.
- Knowledge of modern cloud-native architecture, microservices, and scalable distributed systems.
