Development Accountant

A well-established real estate organization is looking to add a Development Accountant to its growing accounting team. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment and work closely with senior finance leadership across a diverse portfolio of real estate development projects.
The successful candidate will have a strong accounting foundation along with experience in either development or property accounting. This role offers broad exposure beyond traditional month-end accounting, with involvement in project financials, cash flow, financing, joint ventures, and the ongoing accounting requirements associated with land development.
This would be a strong opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership, working through complex financial information, and understanding how accounting decisions connect to the broader business.

Key Responsibilities
Development & Project Accounting
- Manage day-to-day accounting for a portfolio of development entities
- Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, account analysis, and monthly financial reporting
- Oversee A/R and A/P activity, including invoice review, coding, and vendor-related matters
- Review project costs and allocations to ensure financial information is accurate and properly supported
- Reconcile intercompany balances and other project-related accounts
- Maintain organized supporting documentation for financial transactions
- Assist with year-end, audit, tax, and other compliance requirements
Project Finance & Cash Flow
- Monitor project cash flow and funding requirements
- Prepare and maintain cash flow forecasts
- Assist with project funding draws and lender-related reporting
- Monitor financing activity, including loans and letters of credit
- Support cash calls, distributions, and equity-related reconciliations
- Track financial activity associated with development milestones, including land transactions and closings
Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare financial information and reporting for internal and external stakeholders
- Analyze project and entity-level financial information and investigate variances or discrepancies
- Identify potential accounting issues and work toward practical solutions
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
- Provide financial insight to assist with project and business decisions
- Participate in ad hoc analysis and projects as required
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of full-cycle accounting experience
- Background in real estate, property accounting, development accounting, or a closely related environment
- Strong understanding of general accounting principles and financial reporting
- Experience working with multiple entities, ideally including joint ventures or partnerships
- Exposure to cash flow forecasting, budgeting, or project financial analysis
- Strong Excel skills and confidence working with large amounts of financial data
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to understand the bigger picture
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
- A proactive, analytical approach to problem-solving
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both internal and external stakeholders
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline
- CPA designation or progress toward the CPA is an asset
- Experience with real estate accounting software is an asset
