Join a leading global financial institution as a Senior Compliance Manager / Compliance Manager, supporting the Japan business across regulatory compliance, AML, and conduct risk.
Working closely with senior management, the Head of Compliance Japan, and regional APAC teams, you will play a key role in overseeing and continuously strengthening the firm's Japan Compliance framework. You will monitor regulatory developments, engage with Japanese regulators, advise on new business initiatives, and provide practical compliance guidance in a highly regulated financial services environment.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Compliance or AML professional in Japan to take on broad responsibilities, gain senior-level exposure, and contribute directly to the governance and regulatory strategy of a major international financial institution.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor developments in Japanese financial regulations and advise senior management and business teams on regulatory impacts, emerging risks, and required actions.
- Lead the ongoing enhancement of the Japan Compliance framework, including policies, procedures, compliance risk assessments, monitoring, testing, and employee training.
- Act as a key contact for Japanese financial regulators and self-regulatory organizations, supporting regulatory examinations, inquiries, reporting, and supervisory engagements.
- Partner with regional APAC Compliance and AML teams to implement global standards while effectively managing Japan-specific regulatory and compliance risks.
- Support the Head of Compliance, Japan with day-to-day compliance oversight and act as a deputy when required, providing independent and practical advice to the business.
- Review new business initiatives, financial products, and services to identify regulatory requirements and ensure appropriate compliance controls are established before launch.
- Help strengthen the firm's broader AML, conduct risk, governance, and regulatory compliance environment in Japan.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years' experience in Compliance, AML, regulatory affairs, or a related control function within Japan's financial services industry.
- Strong knowledge of Japanese financial regulations, including securities regulations, AML requirements, and regulatory expectations.
- Strong understanding of Compliance and AML frameworks, policies, controls, risk assessments, monitoring, testing, and governance processes.
- Experience engaging with regulators or supporting regulatory examinations and supervisory inquiries.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple compliance priorities in a highly regulated environment.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent stakeholder management, analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Proactive and pragmatic approach with the ability to develop practical solutions while maintaining strong compliance and risk standards.
- Strong judgment and ability to communicate effectively with senior management and business stakeholders.
- High level of ownership, integrity, and ability to operate effectively across international and cross-functional teams.
Language Requirements:
- Japanese: Fluent.
- English: Business level / Fluent.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Experience within banking, securities, investment banking, or another regulated financial institution in Japan.
- Direct experience interacting with Japanese regulators and self-regulatory organizations.
- Broad exposure to AML, conduct risk, regulatory compliance, monitoring, testing, and compliance advisory.
- Experience reviewing new financial products, services, or business initiatives from a regulatory perspective.
- Previous experience working with regional or global Compliance teams within an international financial institution.
