You will analyse Japanese power market regulations, develop internal risk controls, monitor trading activities, and translate regulatory developments into practical policies and strategic insights for senior management.

Key Responsibilities
- Monitor, interpret, and implement Japanese electricity market regulations, market rules, and grid operator guidelines relating to physical power trading and battery storage operations.
- Develop and maintain internal risk controls, trading permissions, compliance policies, and governance frameworks in response to evolving energy market regulations.
- Conduct regulatory, operational, and legal risk assessments across energy trading activities, including contract reviews and counterparty credit evaluations.
- Monitor real-time trading operations to ensure adherence to established risk limits and proactively identify, manage, and mitigate potential compliance breaches.
- Translate complex regulatory changes into clear executive-level risk reporting, strategic metrics, and actionable recommendations for local management.
- Collaborate with commercial, quantitative, legal, risk, and other internal stakeholders to support new renewable energy and power trading initiatives.
- Engage with relevant external regulatory and market stakeholders to support compliance with Japanese electricity market requirements.
- Contribute regulatory and risk expertise to new business areas including battery energy storage and ancillary service markets.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- 3+ years of relevant professional experience, ideally within the Japanese power, electricity, energy trading, regulatory, risk, or compliance sector.
- Experience within electricity retailers/PPS, trading houses, utilities, energy consultancies, regulatory organisations, or similar power market environments.
- Alternatively, regulatory or compliance experience involving METI frameworks and Japanese energy market regulations.
- Strong analytical capability with experience conducting detailed regulatory, legal compliance, and risk assessments.
- Understanding of risk management and compliance requirements relating to energy market or trading operations.
- Ability to interpret complex regulations and translate them into practical internal policies, controls, and governance processes.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant educational background.
Soft Skills:
- Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain regulatory requirements and risk policies to internal teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
- High level of diligence and attention to detail when assessing regulatory, compliance, and trading risks.
- Strong analytical and structured problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across commercial, quantitative, risk, legal, and management functions.
- Comfortable working in a rapidly evolving regulatory and renewable energy market.
Language Requirements:
- Japanese: Fluent level.
- English: Intermediate/Business level.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Knowledge of Japan's electricity trading, power market, renewable energy, or energy storage landscape.
- Familiarity with grid-scale battery storage, ancillary services, flexible capacity, or other emerging energy market structures.
- Experience reviewing commercial contracts or conducting counterparty credit and trading risk assessments.
- Exposure to new renewable energy business development or energy asset management would be advantageous.
