As a key partner to managers and employees, you will provide hands-on HR guidance across performance management, employee relations, Japanese labor compliance, payroll and social insurance support, compensation, and employee engagement. You will also serve as an important cultural and operational bridge between the Tokyo office, regional teams, and global headquarters.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced HRBP or HR Generalist in Japan who wants broad ownership within an international SaaS environment while using both Japanese and English on a regular basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide managers through performance management and employee evaluations, including structured feedback and performance improvement plans, while ensuring alignment with company policies and Japanese regulations.
- Manage employee relations matters, including workplace grievances, investigations, disciplinary cases, and accurate documentation of sensitive HR issues.
- Support compliance with Japanese labor laws, social insurance requirements, and workplace regulations, while assisting with routine payroll processes and complex employee inquiries.
- Partner with recruitment teams on job grading and workforce requirements, and support annual compensation reviews and employee engagement surveys.
- Analyze exit interview feedback and relevant workforce data to identify employee engagement and retention trends.
- Align local HR initiatives with business goals and use workforce metrics to support stronger engagement, retention, and organizational effectiveness.
- Partner with managers and employees as a trusted HR advisor, providing practical guidance across day-to-day people and organizational matters.
- Act as a key bridge between Japan-based employees, regional teams, and global headquarters, supporting effective communication and cross-cultural collaboration.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience as an HR Business Partner, HR Generalist, HR Advisor, or in a comparable HR role in Japan.
- Strong practical knowledge of Japanese labor laws, employment regulations, social insurance administration, and workplace compliance.
- Experience supporting performance management, employee relations, workplace investigations, and other HR advisory activities.
- Experience partnering with managers and employees on complex or sensitive HR matters.
- Ability to support HR operations while contributing to broader talent, engagement, retention, and organizational initiatives.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships with employees, managers, and global stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- High level of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential employee information and sensitive HR matters.
- Ability to navigate complex employee relations issues with sound judgment and a balanced approach.
- Strong cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to operate effectively between Japanese and international teams.
- Comfortable working independently and managing multiple priorities within a fast-paced global organization.
Language Requirements:
- Japanese: Native or fluent proficiency.
- English: Business-level proficiency for regular communication with regional and global stakeholders.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Previous HR experience within a global SaaS, cloud technology, IT, or fast-growing technology company.
- Experience working in multinational or highly matrixed organizations across multiple countries and time zones.
- Familiarity with modern HR platforms and workplace tools such as Workday, Culture Amp, and Google Workspace.
- Experience supporting compensation reviews, employee engagement surveys, workforce analytics, job grading, or retention initiatives.
