This role offers significant exposure to corporate banking, capital markets, derivatives, counterparty risk, and ISDA negotiations. Working closely with commercial and revenue-generating teams, you will help establish appropriate trading limits, structure secure transactions, and maintain a robust credit risk framework in a highly regulated international banking environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead comprehensive counterparty credit risk assessments and financial evaluations for institutional and financial counterparties to establish appropriate trading limits.
- Manage ongoing credit risk and portfolio monitoring, with a particular focus on counterparties and exposures within the Japanese financial market.
- Lead negotiations relating to key legal and trading documentation, including ISDA (International Swaps and Derivatives Association) agreements.
- Prepare regulatory and compliance submissions for Japanese authorities, including the Bank of Japan (BOJ).
- Partner with commercial and revenue-generating teams to evaluate transaction structures while maintaining appropriate credit risk controls.
- Assess exposures involving derivatives and capital markets products, balancing commercial objectives with the institution's risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- More than 5 years of experience in credit risk, counterparty risk, or financial counterparty assessment within banking or financial services.
- Strong experience evaluating the financial strength and creditworthiness of institutional or financial counterparties.
- Deep understanding of derivative products, capital markets, and associated credit risks.
- Experience working with credit limits, transaction structures, portfolio monitoring, or related risk management processes.
- Knowledge of ISDA documentation and the regulatory environment affecting financial institutions in Japan.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent university qualification.
Soft Skills:
- Ability to work independently and make sound risk decisions while managing demanding deadlines.
- Strong analytical and financial assessment capabilities with close attention to detail.
- Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across risk, commercial, legal, and other business functions.
- Commercial awareness and the ability to balance business opportunities with appropriate risk management.
Language Requirements:
- Japanese: Native-level proficiency.
- English: Business-level proficiency for communication within an international financial institution and across regional stakeholders.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Extensive experience with counterparty credit risk for derivatives or capital markets products.
- Practical knowledge of ISDA negotiations and other financial trading documentation.
- Experience working with Japanese financial regulations and regulatory reporting, including interactions involving the Bank of Japan.
- Previous experience in a global bank, investment bank, corporate bank, or other multinational financial institution.
- Experience working with stakeholders across Japan and the wider Asia region.
