Join an energy and grid solutions provider as a SCADA Project Engineer, leading the control design, system integration, deployment, and commissioning of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for major grid infrastructure projects in Japan.
Based in Tokyo, this role serves as a technical bridge between power transmission requirements, SCADA control systems, BESS assets, and electricity market dispatch systems. You will translate grid requirements into high-level control strategies while supporting the reliable integration of large-scale energy storage into Japan's power infrastructure.
This is an opportunity to develop specialized expertise across SCADA, BESS, grid connection, power systems, renewable energy integration, and energy market operations while collaborating with global engineering teams and domestic utility stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead on-site and remote management of complete SCADA system design, integration, deployment, and commissioning.
- Conduct and oversee point-to-point testing for SCADA and associated control systems.
- Develop and implement reliable monitoring and control schemes for utility-scale, grid-connected battery storage assets.
- Design control interfaces for transmission system operators and market dispatch systems, including capacity and power exchanges.
- Translate power transmission and grid requirements into high-level control policies and technical specifications.
- Review requests for proposals (RFPs), estimate engineering requirements, and verify technical feasibility with external project partners.
- Conduct root cause analysis at operational facilities using SCADA logs and protective relay event data.
- Identify technical issues and implement corrective actions to improve system reliability and operational performance.
- Support cybersecurity protocols for critical telemetry and grid infrastructure.
- Continuously develop and improve technical specification templates for SCADA and control systems.
- Collaborate with global engineering teams, Japanese utilities, project partners, and other domestic stakeholders.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering.
- At least 3 years of relevant engineering experience.
- Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical, and thermodynamic fundamentals, with the ability to apply first-principles problem solving.
- Deep technical knowledge of power grid synchronization, voltage and current sources, load balancing, frequency regulation, and relay protection coordination.
- Knowledge of Japanese utility grid connection processes, including curtailment, dedicated online connections, and telemetry requirements.
- Familiarity with Japan's electricity market operations and energy storage dispatch mechanisms.
Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting capabilities, including the ability to perform root cause analysis on operational power systems.
- First-principles approach to complex engineering and technical challenges.
- Effective technical communication skills with the ability to connect global engineering teams and domestic project stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively across on-site and remote engineering environments.
- Strong coordination skills when working with utilities, external partners, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Language Requirements:
- Japanese: Fluent.
- English: Fluent, with at least basic reading and writing skills required for the role.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Business-level English proficiency.
- Practical experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), power conversion, or renewable energy grid integration.
- Knowledge of industrial and power system communication protocols such as MODBUS, DNP3, OPC-UA, IEC 61850, or IEC 60870.
- Understanding of critical infrastructure cybersecurity standards, firewalls, and proxy server configurations.
- Programming or automation experience with SEL RTAC, Ignition, Python, or ladder logic.
- Experience designing or building multi-layer infrastructure networks.
- Relevant networking certifications.
- Experience working with SCADA systems for utility-scale power or energy infrastructure.
