Based in Tokyo, this role focuses on adapting hardware and software specifications to local requirements, driving product launches, navigating grid interconnection and safety standards, and developing Virtual Power Plant (VPP) services alongside global engineering teams.
You will work at the intersection of residential battery storage, EV charging, VPP, V2X, smart grid technology, and product engineering, translating Japan-specific market and regulatory requirements into technical strategies for international product teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute technical strategies to deploy residential battery energy storage systems and home EV chargers at scale in Japan.
- Lead product launch initiatives tailored to domestic regulatory, technical, and market requirements.
- Address grid interconnection requirements, fire safety codes, and required safety certifications for government subsidy eligibility.
- Research, define, and communicate Japan-specific technical product requirements directly to global product management teams in North America and APAC.
- Develop technology roadmaps, planning documents, and cross-functional proposals to establish domestic Virtual Power Plant (VPP) services from concept through execution.
- Collaborate with domestic and international engineers to resolve technical challenges related to VPP and V2X implementation.
- Analyze gaps between existing global product specifications and Japanese market requirements.
- Use data and technical analysis to justify new engineering initiatives and product modifications.
- Review and approve translated technical documentation for regional operational deployment.
- Coordinate cross-functional stakeholders throughout product engineering, localization, and launch initiatives.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience:
- Degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional engineering or technical project management experience.
- Experience managing technical initiatives involving multiple engineering disciplines or stakeholders.
- Ability to translate technical and market requirements into actionable product engineering initiatives.
Soft Skills:
- Strong collaborative leadership skills with the ability to manage cross-functional projects and diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Proactive approach and strong intellectual curiosity to learn, iterate, and solve complex technical challenges quickly.
- Action-oriented mindset with the ability to independently manage diverse engineering initiatives.

- Japanese: Fluent.

- Experience developing products or applications in close collaboration with international engineering teams.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise executive-level summaries.
- Practical engineering experience in renewable energy, battery energy storage, solar power, or EV charging infrastructure.
- Experience with residential battery storage products or home energy systems.
- Knowledge of VPP or V2X technologies and their technical implementation.
- Familiarity with grid interconnection requirements, safety certifications, or regulatory requirements for energy products in Japan.
