Contingency hiring is one of the fastest growing areas of recruitment globally and this is equally true in the Singapore market. My advice to candidates would be that undertaking a temporary or contract assignment is always a rewarding experience and the reasons for being open to doing interim work are numerous. As opposed to sitting at home and searching for a permanent role it is more advisable to maximize that time in a contract role, gaining more experience and improving your marketability, expanding your professional network, giving yourself of a good chance of being converted to a permanent position, ensuring there are no gaps in your CV and – last but not least - earning an income. There will be increasing numbers of contract roles in the future as more and more organisations are seeing the benefits of having a more flexible workforce and are increasing their contingency headcount, so it certainly pays to be open to contracting. My advice to clients would be that hiring a high-calibre contractor can solve so many of your problems, whether your need is for a period of 12 months or more or just for a few weeks. If you want cover during a busy period, if you are recruiting to replace a permanent position and it may take some time, if you have an urgent project that needs completing, if you don’t have the headcount room to recruit a permanent hire or if you are short-staffed due to long term sickness or maternity leave then a professional, experienced contractor would be the answer to all these problems.
