On March 9th Morgan McKinley hosted a business networking event about Fintech and the state of financial services in Japan.
We decided to choose this topic as we’re seeing demand among both foreign IT companies and domestic IT start-ups for people with financial services and technology skills.
The event was in a premier venue in Ginza and featured a discussion panel including industry experts:
Ross Sharrott : CTO of Moneytree KK
Sanjiro Takeuchi: Country Manager at IHS.Markit
Pieter Franken: Director & Senior Technology Advisor, Monex Group
Genki Oka: CEO, Ant Financial Japan
Hidi Yamamoto: Head of Japan Office at Ipreo Japan LLC
Over 80 people attended including IT managers, project managers, investment bankers, HR professionals and people considering a career within the fintech industry.
The speakers outlined the regulatory hurdles in Japan and how they influence the state of the market and the advancement of new technologies and instruments such as blockchain and bitcoin. It also addressed the viewpoints of both B2B and B2C companies. One of the speakers mentioned that he was facing a new competing firm that gives away a key product, whereas the incumbent market leader charges about $6,000 per year for the data. The conclusion was that technology has changed business in the past few years as information becomes easier to share, leading to industry incumbents to seek new ways of delivering value to their core customers.
Here at Morgan McKinley we’d like to thank all of our friends who could attend and participate. Please contact us to be notified of future events.
