Commentary on Finance & Accounting in Commerce & Industry Roles and Remuneration in Tokyo for 2018

2017 had a few notable trends for Finance and Accounting. The most in demand function was FP&A with strong bilingual profiles commanding on average much higher salary increases than elsewhere. Most of our mandates were at the mid to senior level as clients increasingly sought to bring in experienced hires with the ability to be effective business partners and to build relationships and connections outside the finance silo. Other trends included some clients looking for fluency in a third language (most commonly Mandarin) or familiarity with data analytics including knowledge of SQL in particular.

The recruitment market was very competitive and companies that ran a tight interview process and onboarding tended to secure the right people. From an industry point of view tech firms continued to do well, from smaller start-ups new to Japan all the way up to larger blue chips. Successful companies often filled a gap in the market and pioneered technologies such as AI, cloud or data optimization. Other areas of continued growth included renewable energy, manufacturing and chemical.

Commentary on Finance & Accounting in Financial Services Roles and Remuneration in Tokyo for 2018

It has been a stable year for Finance & Accounting within financial services. Where other departments have undergone a certain amount of restructuring, it has been business as usual for most finance departments. The only exception to this is the increased demand  within treasury functions at Japanese headquartered institutions, to ensure that they meet their liquidity and capital requirements under global regulations. Most open roles have been replacement roles and with low turnover and salaries have remained stable.
