A job search can be a roller coaster of emotional highs and lows. So how can you keep your spirits up and keep motivated?

The search is a roller coaster of constant emotional highs and lows, the fear of the unknown is enough to make anyone feel frustrated, and anxious. For several of us, our career is our identity and hunting for a job is like searching for a new you. It’s also a lesson in taking rejection. No matter how many times you get a  rejection letter or told to not take it personally it can take a toll on your motivation and drive.

So how can you keep your spirits up and keep motivated?

Don't Let Your Hopes Get Too High Too Low

As I said earlier the job hunt is a rollercoaster, massive highs and lows. If you can try not to let the successes of getting an interview or the lows of not making past the next round effect your mood. Obviously this is easier said than done.

Create Structure

As humans we crave structure and patterns, the more structured your approach to the job hunt the more control you will have and the effects of the highs and lows will be significantly reduced.

Take a Break

Never underestimate the power of a rest. Weather you take a walk, go to the gym, read a book or go out and socialise. A break away from the job search can do you the world of good. It will take your mind off things and you will come back with a renewed focus.

Seek out Emotional Support

As the old saying goes: “a problem shared is a problem halved.” Simply talking about your fears and emotions with a trusted friend can be an effective way of dealing with challenging emotions like rejection and stress.

Don't Lose Focus or Hope!

Try to avoid applying for every job you see, this may make you look desperate and you’ll lose focus. Try to take more time on fewer applications and put your best foot forward for these few roles.

If you are currently on the job hunt for a new role and need any advice and your next steps please don’t hesitate to contact us and let us help take the stress out of the search for you!
