What about the thousands of college students who have graduated with an engineering degree in recent months. What is next for them?
With the Leaving Cert results out, many young students will be nervously awaiting their university offers and many will contemplating a career in engineering. But what about the thousands of college students who have graduated with an engineering degree in recent month? What is next for them? What is the best way to break into the world of engineering?
Here are my top five tips for engineering graduates.
Internships and work experience
This is key. The more experience you can gain whilst still at third level college the more attractive you will be to potential employers. It is also an excellent opportunity to get exposure to various different industries and working environments plus which subsequently help you decided what route you want to go down. Many of these roles are unpaid, however, this is very much a case of short term loss for long-term gain. This experience will be invaluable when it comes to interviewing for graduate programmes etc.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to gain priceless international experience which looks very impressive on a CV. College students and engineering graduates are entitled to working visa’s that they might not be entitled to in a few years’ time so my advice would be to make use of this.
If travel is not your thing and you are finding it hard to secure a job maybe further education is the answer. With a wide arrange of Post Grads and Masters available there is a lot to choose from. My advice to you would be to pick a coarse that is relevant to the area you would like to work in. They can be quite expensive so make the right choice for you.
That all elusive perfect job is not just going to land on your lap. Work on your CV, target companies you would like to work with and make sure they have your CV. They may not have something suitable for you now but they might have in the future. If you’re not in you can’t win.
Social media is becoming more and more important when it comes to job hunting. Spend time creating a professional Linkedin profile that will give a good insight into your skills and experience.
