Commentary on Technology Roles and Contract Rates in Ireland for 2019

Overview of 2018

It has been a significantly successful year economically for the Irish tech market, with a 37% increase in Cork alone in the number of contract roles coming into the market. There has been significant growth in the number of roles coming into the contract technology market in particular, this is due to a number of large projects kicking off and scaling up very quickly, as well as the desire for companies to remain agile so contract is the best option for them. As the economy has been particularly buoyant, it has finally given people the confidence to embark upon contract opportunities rather than always looking towards the more traditional permanent career route. Contract rates are also very lucrative which is a major pull factor for job seekers. People who are relocating for roles here are more open to contract roles than others as it gives them a taste of the local market without having to commit fully. Contract has also been emerging as the popular choice for technology professionals as they get the opportunity to be immersed in really interesting aspects of projects before moving on in turn to the next project.

2018 was a challenging year for hiring managers in the IT Contract space as there was increased competition across the technology market. It was very much a candidate focused market, with the demand for technology talent reaching unprecedented levels. Therefore, job seekers had their pick of opportunities, with both SME’s and multinationals offering roles which gave them exposure to cutting edge technologies.

In Demand Roles

The most popular roles in this sector were Project Manager, Business Analyst, SAP Specialist, Data Scientist and .Net Developers. A number of these positions are key stakeholders within significant projects that have kicked off during 2018. This is often the case as mentioned above, companies are looking to stay agile and adapt to market trends. Data and Security were the prominent growth areas of the year. In terms of relevant skills and qualifications, PMP Cert, Agile Certification, Scrum Master Certification, CISSP and CBAP all stood out. In regards to contractor rates, the most notable increase was for Project Managers, Business Analysts and Data Scientists, who received increases of between 8-12% on daily rates.

Market Developments & Workplace Trends

As mentioned above, data has established itself as one of the main focus areas for hiring across all sectors. The enactment of GDPR has enhanced this, with demand for IT Security Specialists continuing to rise. Companies can face severe financial penalties if they are negligent in their management of personal data. Therefore, there has been a rapid amount of hiring of senior professionals to meet these new regulatory standards before GDPR comes into effect. Within this area, there was an increase in hiring of DPO’s, but one issue with this is that companies were unsure of how long they were going to have a need for this role within their company. Therefore, they were more willing to take these professionals on on a contract basis, resulting in an influx of contract assignments within the sector.

The trend of flexible working is becoming more and more prominent within the industry, with companies becoming more willing to accommodate professionals who are seeking flexible working conditions. Flexi time and remote working are gradually becoming commonplace in the IT contract sector. These trends alone can result in being a key differentiator for employers in regards to talent attraction and retention. For the contract side of the sector in particular, completion bonuses are a growing trend. These ensure that the company in question retains the talent required to complete said project successfully.

Predictions for 2019

Looking towards 2019, the IT contract market is set to undergo exponential growth, much like the year gone by. There is set to be a strong demand in the Financial Services and FinTech sectors, as more and more companies move their operations to Ireland. These are set to be predominantly Dublin based, but there will be some activity in Cork as well. Overall, the technology sector is an industry driving disruptive change in the market through the development of new solutions and products which are set to have a positive impact on job creation. Within this, the contractor market is highly competitive and buoyant at the moment, and this looks set to continue into 2019 and beyond.

Advice for Employers

It is important for employers and hiring managers to know exactly what they are looking for from a contractor in order to attract, source and retain talent. Although it is sometimes hard to forecast but employers should have a fair idea of the market rates so as to ensure they are offering an appropriate contract rate  in conjunction with what is averagely on offer. By creating a certain appeal as regards to working on a particular project, they can capture a candidate’s interest in their available opportunity. Their interview process should also be as streamlined as possible to avoid delays and as a final option, they should consider offering a completion bonus as an incentive to retain the contractor in order to complete a project successfully.

Advice for Jobseekers

Build an awareness around the opportunities in contract based employment. If you are currently working a permanent role, and are hesitant to move into contract work, we would advise you do your research into what can be gained by making the switch. The current technology market is job seeker driven as mentioned previously. Engaging in contract employment, especially in a niche role, can offer value from both a financial and experiential perspective. Contract employment provides professionals with the opportunity to gain cross-industry experience, without the long-term commitment. From a remuneration perspective, specialised contractors in Ireland can charge at a premium if they demonstrate a strong record in their given specialism.
