Commentary on Science Roles and Remuneration in Ireland for 2019

Overview of 2018

Ireland continues to be a global leader for the Life Sciences market. This has been reflected by the number of manufacturing facilities who have setup, expanded, merged, taken over, and built on greenfield and brownfield sites in Ireland in 2018.

Ireland is an attractive country for multinational life science companies due to the availability of highly educated and qualified technical candidates. Ireland’s stable tax and regulatory framework also contributes to the country’s success in attracting significant amounts of investment in this area.

One emerging area of Science that made significant progress in 2018 was genomics. There’s been a notable rise in organisations showing keen interest in this area and we expect that this will have an even greater impact going forward on biological manufacturing with the introduction of Crispr and gene technology.

The Science market experienced substantial expansion in 2018, with many key job announcements nationwide, such as BioMarin’s facilities expansion resulting in 51 vacancies.

In Demand Areas

Technical services has been a key driver for candidates to progress their careers and providing opportunities for career development into more specialized areas of analytical development and process chemistry. The Quality Control (QC) market continues to experience high demand for skilled and experienced candidates at all levels, in particular QC analysts with a minimum of 3-4 years industry experience are highly sought after. There is also a high demand for experienced regulatory affairs candidates in Ireland, in particular there is a shortage of professionals in the specialist/officer level to fill the required number of open roles.

Market Developments & Workplace Trends

Salaries remained very similar to 2018 figures with the only real obvious increase of 5-10% for QC analysts in the Dublin market.  This increase came as a result of employers reacting to the market and needing to be more competitive to secure talent.

There continues to be support for women in science with several activities organised by industry bodies such as Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) who are actively promoting and encouraging women to study science courses in their third level education.

Flexibility in the workplace is also a hot topic of conversation by human resource professionals, as they look to address their skills shortage and ensure they maintain the talent required to support key positions in their company. There has been a drive in support for women returning to work after career breaks or maternity leave. In general, the science industry is quite gender balanced, and these efforts only serve towards making it even more so.

Trends wise, flexible working has increased across Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Trials and specialised Technical Operations roles, whereas full onsite attendance is still required across the QC manufacturing market.

More and more, companies have been tracking how they fare against competitors and are requesting information on what they can do to make their company more attractive. Hiring times have reduced significantly, with interview processes moving faster and decisions being made on the day of interview. HR professionals have been playing a key role here for some of the leading companies.

With the enforcement of Brexit impending, there has been an increase in Contract Manufacturing Organisations (CMO) setting up their headquarters in Ireland, not only for the benefits of tax incentives, but also to access the niche skill set that Irish employees hold.

Predictions for 2019

MDR came into enforcement in May 2017 and will be fully adopted by Ireland by 2022. This places enhanced obligations on manufacturers to provide The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA), Ireland’s national regulator, with pre-clinical and clinical data to include the results of engineering, laboratory and simulated tests, relating to new products.

In terms of job vacancies for 2019, market commentary would suggest that there will be no shortage of opportunities for Science professionals in Ireland. December job announcements reflect positively on the future employment market as Central Pharma are aiming to recruit 100 professionals over the coming 5 years and with Genomics Medicine Ireland creating 600 vacancies in the Medical Science and Life Sciences space. The negative side to this will be the challenge that employers will face in filling these positions. The current volume of Science students in Ireland will not match the future demand, so employers will be forced to look outside of Ireland to relocate skilled professionals to fill the void.

Advice for Employers

The main piece of advice to hiring managers and employers in general would be to act quickly to ensure they don’t miss out on the best possible talent available. As mentioned above, Ireland is an attractive location for multinational companies from all over the world, meaning there are ample opportunities on the market for professionals to engage in. Meeting candidate’s demands and expectations is more important than ever before, especially in regards to offering attractive remuneration and benefits such as flexibility, as mentioned above.

Advice for Jobseekers

For professionals seeking employment in the sector, it is vital to have a clear understanding of what you are looking for in an employer, With a lack of qualified professionals in an already buoyant market, knowing what’s important to you career wise and what would assist your professional development is key to securing a role you are happy in. As hiring processes are moving quicker than ever before, there is little room for error, so doing your research before every interview, no matter what round, and making a good first impression are all important factors to consider during your job hunt.
