Commentary on Senior Sales Roles and Remuneration in Ireland for 2019

Senior Sales appointments remain critical, given the commercial impact on organisations. With the Irish market nearing full employment, the majority of job seekers are currently employed. Many senior sales professionals are exploring new industries citing transferable skills to facilitate this cross-over. Therefore hiring in this space is, for the most part, is highly dependent on the level of experience of the candidates. A candidates’ demonstrable prior success is key to the employers’ decision making. From a geographical perspective, Dublin continues to be the hot spot for hiring senior sales professionals, with many national positions being based in the capital.

In Demand Skills

Employers are still focusing their attention on candidates with strong people management skills, demonstrable success in prior roles, distinct leadership qualities, commercial understanding and awareness of industry trends. Salaries can vary quite a bit in this area so it is difficult to say whether there has been an industry-wide rise or fall in remuneration levels. OTE (On-target earnings) are remaining solid with targeted commissions providing excellent remuneration for those who are hitting/exceeding targets.

Market Developments & Workplace Trends

In such a high pressure line of work, flexibility is viewed on the market as a key selling point for attracting senior sales talent. Flexitime & the ability to work from home is becoming a crucial differentiator for employers as the pool of available professionals in this field remains limited.

My advice to employers & hiring managers alike is to interview quickly and ensure all candidates are met in person.  Senior Sales people can be excellent communicators, and to ensure cultural fit, it’s important to have a face to face meeting where possible during the process.
