I recently came across a useful graph below from The Chartered Institute for IT which provides all the different career paths depending on personal skills one possesses. 

Although this graph is a basic sample to outline the opportunities, it can be very helpful information especially for junior candidates when planning their career in the mid-long term. The graph can be also be more complex, for example Project Management position can be divided into different areas to look at, such as Application PM, Infrastructure PM, IT Security PM, IT Audit PM, Program / Change Manager, PMO etc

Therefore it really depends on what sort of sector or domain the IT professional would like to work in, and perhaps getting an IT certificate will help you get ahead in your career.

The website is also useful as it lists out the different certifications that can be taken for career a step up within application, infrastructure and project management area.
