It was 5 years ago that our Managing Director herself published a blog on unusual interview questions. 5 years have passed and interviewers have become even more creative over the years .

So, we have decided to put together 5 of the most unique interview questions of 2018/2019 that our candidates have been asked in job interviews and asked our Managing Director, Louise Langridge to tell us how she would answer them.

After all, it doesn’t get much better than getting advice from the Managing Director of a global recruitment agency on how to answer unique interview questions.

Of course, some traditional interview questions are still being asked too, such as “Why do you want to work here?”  but they are often considered old-school or as Liz Ryan puts it “painfully dumb” even.

In fact, our salary guide reveals that the power across most industries is shifting from employers to employees so if anything the candidate could ask the employer the question: What it is that you have to offer me, to want to work here?

But traditional questions aside, below is what our Managing Director has to say about these unique interview questions:

Firstly I would like to give you my top tips for answering an unusual interview question. The most important thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong answer and to remain calm. The interviewer is often looking to assess more how you will approach the question and the thought process you go through rather than the specific answer you give. If there is an opportunity to answer this question and demonstrate something unique about yourself that may be valuable to this organisation and role, that would be the ideal scenario.

Q1: What's something you haven't told us, but that we'll probably find out in a few weeks?

"I am always looking at the future and new ways of doing things to continuously improve on the way things are being done. Sometimes I need to stop and enjoy the moment and celebrate the success we have had rather than always challenging myself and the business on the What’s the next?"

Q2: How lucky are you and why?

"This is an interesting question as it depends on your definition of luck. Although I don’t think I have ever won anything based on luck in my lifetime, thinking back to all those lucky door prizes, lotto tickets and scratch cards. I have always thought of myself as lucky. I come from a very close knit family who have always been there to support me whatever I have taken on in life and instilled in me the belief that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. I am fortunate to be surrounded by fantastic people in all areas of my life and opportunities have always come to me to continue to take on new challenges and keep developing."

Q3: If you were 80 years old, what would you tell your children?

"Well, I’m not quite 80 yet but I don’t think the advice would change that much from what I tell my kids today. Always treat others as you would want to be treated yourself, be polite, have manners and most importantly have fun."

Q4: What was the last gift you gave someone?

"My 10 year old daughter, a phone, as all of her friends have one and she is now walking to school one morning per week on her own. I’m still questioning that decision!"

While our consultants prepare both, employers and candidates for the interview, those tricky and unusual interview questions will remain probably some of the toughest ones to answer but interview preparation remains key.
