Making a career change is always a little scary because you don’t really know what it will be like until you have started'
I have been in the recruitment industry for nearly three years now, and from day one have always enjoyed what I do. Connecting with people in meaningful ways and working together to find the best possible opportunity for them is one of the many reasons that gets me excited to go into work every day.
Working for a recruitment firm that specializes in finding talent for different companies across Canada always seemed like a rewarding and safe career, I thought to myself “if I do my job well, it will always be there”. Technology is a booming industry with a shortage of good talent, especially in the GTA, so it was a natural career progression for me to move into IT recruitment. Well just when I decided to take a leap of faith and resign from my already great job to accept a new one with Morgan McKinley Technology, the world went into a global pandemic and we were in a nationwide lock down.
It was only natural for me to immediately think the worst, why would this company still move forward with my start date if people aren’t hiring? My start date had been pushed out by two weeks and I quickly started to embrace the fact that I would be unemployed for who knows how long before the economy started to recover.
After having a few conversations trying to remain hopeful that things would work out for the best, I was given the good news that I would still be joining Morgan McKinley, despite what was happening in the economy *insert sigh of relief here*. Prior to my new start date, I was provided with my work laptop, remote start details and expectations, as well as continuously kept up to date with what was happening in the business/ how they were going come out of this pandemic stronger than ever. I was already starting to feel like I was part of the team and excited to be joining such a great, supportive organization.
One of the core values of Morgan McKinley is Embracing Change, and this is a big change that the business from the top down has embraced and truly shown that they live and breath by their core values.
Making a career change is always a little scary because you don’t really know what it will be like until you have started. I’m finishing off my fourth week as a new employee working remotely and I am confident that I have joined an amazing company with a great vision. I don’t know how long it will be until I can officially meet everyone in person, but for the time being I will be focusing on adapting to this new remote life while connecting with my colleagues, speaking to job seekers and hiring managers, and working in partnership to overcome this pandemic together and stronger than ever.
I know my story may be one of the lucky ones, so I'd love to help anyone who might be going through the uncertainties of searching for a new job right now.
