Women in Technology

Last Thursday we were pleased to host our second Women in Technology, Data and Analytics meetup in partnership with Assembly Payments. The event allows us to unite together for one simple reason: to share stories of what it is to be a female within the tech industry. The struggles, challenges, highs and lows were all discussed and the event acted as a forum for women to speak openly about their experiences in a welcoming safe environment.

Following a similar structure to our first event, we began the night with some drinks and nibbles before gathering to listen to a panel of senior women, within the industry, discuss probing questions regarding their career and lessons learned. Speakers included Lucinda Acheson (Data Strategy & Tech Lead, Amicus Digital), Kate Andrews (Engineering Lead, Tyro Payments), May Lam (CIO, Assembly Payments) and Joanne Walker (Managing Director, Customer & Core Banking, Westpac) and MC Louise Langridge (APAC Regional Managing Director, Morgan McKinley). Questions discussed included:

  • What do you attribute your success to?
  • What attracted you to your current organisation?
  • What is the one big decision in your career that you would change if you could do it again?
  • If you started your career again now, what would you do differently?
  • What is one piece of practical advice you would give to someone starting out?

Clear themes emerged from the panel discussions amongst the speakers including being brave and taking roles that will push you outside your comfort zone, finding a mentor early in your career and being confident enough to follow your own path.

Everyone then split into smaller discussion groups to workshop the following challenges and thoughts facing women day to day within the industry:

  • What does happiness mean to you? - Kate
  • Work vs Home (being present when you are at home and not feeling guilty that you are not checking emails) - Lucy
  • What are your 3 wishes - May
  • Being true to your own personal brand - Joanne

The workshops allowed everyone to gather with a group of like-minded women to discuss the issue that resonated the most to their personal journey so far. Some key themes that came out of everyone’s discussions included the following:

  • Achieving a sense of balance takes time and ultimately you need to identify what is most important to you. Employers are becoming increasingly flexible as most families now have both parents working full time which means tasks, such as kids drop off, are becoming increasingly complex.
  • Happiness comes from a sense of inner peace. It is a mixture of physical, internal and external factors.  Feeling safe, secure and respected was the number one factor everyone within the group identified as key to being the foundation for other aspects to build upon.
  • Be clear with your goals and setting timelines for things to be achieved. This holds you accountable and gives you a smaller step timeline to achieving bigger goals. As May quoted from Mohammed Ali - “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough”.
  • Building your own personal brand takes time and needs to represent what you offer to the workplace that is unique to your own talents and strengths. Although you may find a mentor who is successful and can take on pieces of inspiration from them, your brand will resonate the most when it is your OWN.

The second meet up definitely built upon what we had started with our first event at KPMG. Thank you to everyone who came and a special thank you to our inspiring speakers! We look forward to seeing everyone who attended at our next event in November (venue to be confirmed).
