Contracting Jobs

So you’ve made the decision that your current role isn’t providing you with the challenges you desire?

You may have just arrived in Australia and are looking for that first role? Or maybe you’ve been unfortunate enough to have been caught up in the recent wave of redundancies and have now found yourself back in the job market? Or you could just be very dissatisfied in your current role? If you are, have a look to see if any of our current jobs is of interest to you.

For whatever reasons, the first step for most candidates is to seek out a well respected, specialist agency in their profession to set up a face to face meeting to discuss their future career prospects.

If you’re taking this step, it’s vital you take the time to plan for the meeting, ensuring you utilise the market knowledge and networks the consultants will have, as well as feeling comfortable leaving the meeting that your consultant has a clear understanding of what you’re looking for and why. A few ideas may include:

Companies you want to work for

Write a list and bring it with you to the meeting.

What industries interest you – for example, FMCG, technology, retail banking, travel, media, property and why they interest you or why they don’t?

How about company size? Are you after global organisations, ASX listed, private or  start-ups?

Do you want to work for a well known-brand? Which ones – CBA, Qantas, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, News Limited? What interests you about these companies and why?

It may sound simple but if you come prepared, you’ll often find consultants will have a network of clients within a number of the organisations you’ve listed. If they can show their clients you’re truly passionate about their organisations and have shown this passion throughout the meeting, it will potentially give you that step above the rest.

Roles you’re after

Consider this carefully and make sure you have a good understanding of what type of roles you desire, would consider and would not look at. If you don’t have a CLEAR idea, your consultant won’t either.

What are you looking to add to your previous experience? What did you enjoy about your previous role and what did you not enjoy?  Do you want a technical role or a business facing role and why? Where do you want to be in 2 years or 5 years? Do you want to manage staff or do you have no desire to manage staff?

Having an idea of the type of roles you will consider is one thing - but having a detailed and clear conversation with your consultant on what you really like and don’t like in a role will be a much better use of your time and benefit you in the long-term.

What are your priorities?

We all have differing views on what is important to us and what will make us happy in the work force. Have a think about your own personal priorities and order them in terms of preference. They could be salary, company culture, career progression, company brand, work-life balance, flexible working hours, role type and responsibilities, office location, industry of the organisation, job security and so on.

Putting time aside to plan prior to meeting your chosen recruitment agency will result in a far more productive discussion and often resulting in defined next steps as to how you can work together to land that dream job.
