Commentary on Project & Change Management Roles and Remuneration in Sydney for 2018
Businesses are continuing to drive cost-saving initiatives, and as such we have seen an increase in offshoring for certain service models. In turn, we've seen a high demand for business Project Managers across most sectors. Individuals that have experience delivering projects with HR, Supply Chain, Customer, and Finance and can bridge the gap between business and technology have a preferred skill set at this time.
In 2017, we saw a slight difference in the way businesses were spending their budgets across Projects compared to the previous year. Instead of rapidly recruiting junior to mid-level project managers, organisations were keen to understand how they could transform their businesses to exceed expectations and drive competition within their sectors. This translated to a growth in recruitment for more senior Business Transformation positions during the latter part of the year.
There was also a rise in competition between different industries, which saw cost-saving activities shaping the way organisations recruit. New players like Amazon, Netflix, and startups have been building their presence in the Australian market. This meant that organisations needed to find new ways to promote sales and increase customer satisfaction to remain competitive. This prompted some businesses to ramp up recruitment in Program and Project management, as new strategic initiatives were created.
Many businesses are currently looking for Agile delivery resources, Change Managers, and Business Project Managers. We have always seen a high demand for hands-on Project Managers, and we’re predicting that the demand for good Agile professionals will outweigh supply in this space, resulting in more companies needing to look offshore for this talent.
The Financial Services space is facing continued regulatory pressure, which is putting a strain on demand. Regulatory requirements will ensure a high demand for compliance-focused Project, Program, and Change Managers.
As if often the case in the Transformation space, contract daily rates are not converting to permanent/fixed term offerings. While organisations are offering permanent opportunities, they are unable to compete with the equivalent level day rate that many Project and Change professionals can demand. We have seen and will continue to see a push towards fixed term and permanent hires as organisations look to cut costs of expensive daily rates.
The Project space continues to be slightly male dominated, particularly in the more technical Project Manager roles. However, there has been a significant increase in the number of females taking up business-focused roles, particularly at the Program Management level. We expect this to continue to increase in the future.
We've seen an increase in both local recruitment of individuals, but also an increase in demand for out-of-state individuals. There is a continued demand for candidates from the United States and the United Kingdom as they bring new and competitive initiatives to the local market. We’re expecting more companies to look off-shore for skills like Agile Delivery and Change management in 2018, all of which will be of course visa dependent.
Salaries are likely to remain fairly stable in 2018 but have flattened slightly as the entry day rate increases and the top end drops back. We’re expecting an increase in contract rates this year as certain talent is difficult to find in the current market. Permanent and fixed-term salaries are unlikely to change as we see an increase in these roles in 2018.
