Commentary on IT Roles and Remuneration in Sydney for 2018

We’ve recently seen a major move to build out broadband wireless networks in Australia, which will provide infrastructure that’s able to support the Internet of Things. This will allow the Internet of Things to become a much bigger part of our everyday lives.

Technology companies, city officials, and other groups have been putting wireless cameras and sensors in pavements, light poles, and outside buildings, and these will be important tools for city management and urban planning in the future.

We’re predicting a massive growth in security, with a high demand for security experts. This is an area that will only grow as independent hackers target companies in every industry, aiming to steal corporate data, secrets, and identities. Healthcare will also evolve, as digital technology makes it easier to make a diagnosis, manage patient records, and prevent diseases.

We expect to see an increase in web development roles, technical support, and a variety of IT jobs in Australia. Within software development, there will be a high demand for full stack developers, particularly those focused on Javascript frameworks. IOS and Android developers will also be in demand, as well as front-end developers for both AngularJS and React JS.

Within IT security and architecture, solutions architects will be in high demand, particularly those experienced in cloud integration. There will also be a strong demand for cybersecurity consultants and network security engineers/architects.

Anytime a shortage of skill or talent is noted, IT is guaranteed to be one of the key sectors mentioned, and businesses are certainly struggling to find the right talent right now. The most successful and experienced recruiters will have a strategy and will target the correct skills and sectors when searching for high-quality candidates.

IT has continually suffered from a high demand and low supply for top talent. IT candidates tend not to actively look for new IT jobs in Australia. Instead of simply headhunting with an offer for a higher salary, recruiters need to understand what IT professionals are looking for and offer greater challenge and opportunity, increased flexibility, an innovative culture, and the chance to experiment, test, and create.

Businesses in this industry have historically found it challenging to find strong female talent. Currently, approximately 80% of IT professionals are male. At the same time, most employers are aiming to attract more females in 2018, with many companies driving diversity and planning to increase female employees.

Most IT candidates are sourced locally, however many vendors have offshore teams, giving the perception that IT professionals in Australian companies tend to be more international. IT is a mobile industry with highly transferable skills. This opens up numerous opportunities for international work.

Just like in other industries, while there was a heavy focus on permanent recruitment in 2017, we’re now seeing a shift into contract work which allows businesses to grow without the commitment of a long-term contract. At the same time, companies are continually hoping to lock in quality talent, and are willing to offer permanent roles to the right candidates.

Hiring practices are changing slightly, with IT clients using psychometric testing and verbal and numeric reasoning. For specific web development roles, organisations are sometimes asking developers to complete a technical project and present it back, for example by coding in Github.

We’re expecting salaries to continue to grow steadily in 2018. However, this will be highly dependent on each specific area. Within technology, we’re anticipating even greater competition and salary fluctuation for data analytics, DevOps, data security, and big data skillsets due to the current shortage of talent.

Organisations are increasingly offering other benefits to candidates so they can attract the best possible talent. These packages step up from the traditional salary and bonus, offering employee must-haves like company phones and laptops, additional leave, and company-paid maternity and paternity leave.
