Commentary on HR Roles and Remuneration in Tokyo for 2018

There was consistent demand in 2017 for HR manager and HR business partner roles. We also worked on a high volume of HR director roles in which our clients were looking for change agents to come into an organization and help to transform the culture. Stakeholder management, the ability to develop credibility quickly, leadership and being an effective bridge between global/region and the Japan business were in demand skills. Another focus of activity was on talent acquisition functions. Agency recruiters were very much back in demand for in-house roles because of their more proactive approach. Previously there was a perception among some clients that they would struggle to adapt to larger corporate structures.

There was no dominant industry trend throughout 2017 but it was interesting to see more of our mandates coming from financial services clients as the year progressed. Retail and tech clients were solidly recruiting throughout the year, a lot of familiar names but also several startups that aggressively ramped up hiring throughout 2017. Finally there was a resurgence of activity among B2B clients and one of the in-demand skills of 2017 was for plant HR managers.
