Finance & Accountancy - Market Overview

  • The senior finance hiring market remains active and accountants in investment banking with between two and four years’ post qualified experience continue to have a number of career opportunities available to them when moving roles.

  • There has been a more cautious approach to hiring at the newly qualified accountant level in the first quarter of 2008 as institutions await further clarity on what activity levels within the financial markets may look like for the rest of the year.

  • In contrast at the part qualified level, there are steady volumes of hiring taking place. Product and financial controllers with tangible experience are at a premium both for temporary and permanent roles.

  • Over the last year and most noticeably the last few months, basic salaries have risen for finance roles within asset management to bring them more in line with those offered by the investment banks. Bonuses in these houses have fallen more in line with the performances of funds, in contrast to the investment banks where they tend to be linked to share price. It can therefore be expected that bonuses will continue to make up a substantial part of total compensation packages.

  • The temporary and contract accountancy market experienced a high demand for accountants with compliance and regulatory experience in Q1. The current climate has acted as a fundamental driver for financial services companies to understand and control their financial risk, and as such demand for good analytical accountants in risk and controlling roles remains high.

  • There has been a noticeable increase in the number of counter offers temporary candidates have been receiving over the last quarter. The increased competition has highlighted the continuing battle organisations are facing to attract and retain quality individuals for their business.
