Corporate Finance/M&A - Market Overview

  • Demand for front office investment banking professionals with emerging markets or Central Eastern European experience has persisted during the first quarter of 2008 as deal activity continues in this area.

  • As banks make selective redundancies, particularly across their leveraged finance teams, candidates with this skill-set are looking to diversify and consider other options which suit their backgrounds, including financial sponsors and private equity.

  • For those at analyst and associate level, private equity houses and hedge funds continue to be an attractive proposition, particularly with the uncertainty in the investment banking market.  However, investment banks who are looking to hire laterally for these analyst and associate roles are still having to ensure their offering is extremely competitive in order to secure key talent.

  •  Whilst basic salaries remain relatively steady within investment banking, in terms of the bonus provision, there has been a definite move towards offering a greater percentage in stock as part of banks’ retention strategies.
